Carlton 8

For slick city riding with hills and weather, the Carton 8 is great. This 8-speed steel bike with fenders handles well and gets the job done in classic Raleigh style. Whether you are riding up to the corner store for a gallon of milk or zipping down to work, the Carlton is ideal for casual urban trips, quick errands and commuting.

This city bike has a unique Raleigh silhouette with dual top tubes, a one piece integrated handlebar and stem for a clean look, a platform rack with classy wood inlay featuring a burnished Raleigh Heron insignia, and color matched fenders to help keep you clean and dry. The reflective decaling on the downtube adds visibility for riding at night or during early morning hours, and the bike bell lets peds and other riders know you’re coming.

It worked well until now

I'm 6'7 240; I would keep this is mind for this review:
I didn't find this bike uncomfortable, I wish it had a larger frame, but for the price I got it for, there was not a better deal at the time.
It's been serving me very well commuting to work and to/from university, though today (ironically after thoroughly cleaning it) I was riding to class, had a spill in the middle of a road,
as I got my bearings, i saw the damage; this is only my second wipeout on this bike over about 5-6 months of fairly frequent use, and my front wheel's spokes snapped off, and the rim was bent.

I keep my size in mind for this, as most people will be putting a lot less stress on their bikes, I see it as a solid choice! And my case was somewhat of an out-lier, and now back to ebay to find a replacement wheel :(

Terrific Bike with a couple of minor annoyances

Review by Minmis
Overall Quality

Have been riding this for a couple of months now. Overall it is a terrific commuter bike. Very well built (much more solid than other urban/commute bikes I have owned), rides very smoothly, the gears shift flawlessly, etc. Would definitely recommend it. I assembled it myself, and it took about 45 minutes ( I can change a bike tire, but that is about it for my mechanical abilities). The youtube vidoes were very helpful.

Two minor annoyances that caused me to take one star off. The first is no kickstand! I guess this is sort of on me for not noticing this when shopping, but why in the world do you have make a commuter bike without a kickstand? I went out and installed my own seperately for $10, but it would have been nice not to have to deal with that. The second thing is the front rack. It seems to be only for is so small that I can't imagine what if anything you could actually use it for. After two weeks I removed it, as it just added weight and was not very practical. If you are going to having something in the front, at least make it a basket so that things can be stored there without falling out.

Those annoyances aside, this is a high quality bike that I would recommend.

For the price point & performance, this bike is amazing. It flows & handles like a dream. Not to mention the matte blue color & double top tube. It's a classic designthat meets modern simplicity....
