Overall a very nice bike!

Review by Son Rising
Overall Quality

I got a Port Townsend ordered from Raleigh and it was delivered yesterday via Fed Ex. The bike arrived in less than 24 hours. It arrived in good condition. The bike is marked "this side up" and "do not lay on side", yet it was on the truck very much on it's side and sloping upside down. Still, it arrived undamaged and ready to assemble. I assembled the bike carefully. The Raleigh instruction mentions some basic tools included, but there were none which is okay because I have my own tools. The headset felt rough and so I re-greased the bearings and changed the spacer stack arrangement to allow better clearance of the front cantilever brake cable stop/hangar which was binding on the headset bearing cup. That went well and it's very smooth now. The brakes weren't too bad to assemble and adjust, using the Tektro PDF online was the way to go there. The Sora crankset is smooth. The Sora derailleurs adjusted well per Raleigh's guide. The overall finish is very nice and the bike feels very nimble, fast and light. I chose not to install the front fender, and remove the rear, setting those aside with the rack, in storage for future possible use. So, my Port Townsend isn't so portly, more a trim zesty driveway zipper, store-runner and mail-getter. The included seat is attractive yet very uncomfortable, so I changed that out. The duracork handgrips are very nice and so are the brake levers and shifters. I really like the Kenda Karv tires too. The handlebar shape is good, but for my long torso the headset is a little too short in length, so I'll be changing that and adding some rise to it. The bar and stem are good, just not the best fit for me. The pedals that came with the bike are not what were spec'd. They are basic platform pedals, not "steel clips with leather straps", so I'll be contacting customer service about that. Well, I've had the bike just one day now and have done a good deal of riding and tweaking the tuning because I'm picky and really like good running bikes. It's a great bike for the price paid ($599 shipped free) and a hopefully it will last a long time. If you're not mechanically inclined then I'd suggest going to your local bike-store for assembly, or at least for inspection / tuning. Assembly is a bit tricky and time consuming, but for me it was quite enjoyable and I probably care more than most mechanics would. Time will tell if the bike holds up and lives up to my standards. The last bike I bought new is nearly 20 years old now and is still almost perfect (a USA made GT). If I have any troubles, I'll try to leave additional feedback. I really love it so far! If I can get the seat and stem arrangement tailored to me that will be great. If Raleigh would send me some clip pedals that would be nice too! Overall a great bike so far!
