Great Adventure / Gravel bike

Review by Chunker
Overall Quality

I have a few hundred miles on my Roker Comp now so I wanted to provide my feedback on the bike. Over the years, my riding style has changed so I decided to look for a more gravel-specific bike as I get away from traditional road riding. I had a few things I wanted in a gravel bike including a carbon frame, hydraulic brakes, and as many mounting options for racks and fenders as I could get. At first I though I wanted a compact crankset but after converting my CX bike to a 1x, I became neutral on whether a new gravel bike would come with a compact crank or a 1x. Speaking of CX, I love my Raleigh cyclocross bike (not getting rid of it), but the Roker Comp offered a longer wheelbase and a few other features that my CX bike didn’t.

Overall, I am very happy with my choice. Unfortunately, there have been a few things that I have had to change in order to make the bike comfortable for me. For a 56cm bike, I was surprised how stretched out I needed to be to ride in the hoods. Even my road race bike didn’t have that long of a stretch. There are a few things that lead to that - the offset in the seatpost (20mm), the 100mm stem (which is standard on most 56cm bikes) and the reach of the handlebars. I wasn’t sure at first if I would like the flared handlebars but that question was answered after the first ride...I love them. Unfortunately, when you add up all of the items that stretch you out, it was just too much for me. I tried changing seatposts but was getting knee pain so I went back to the original seat posts and made other adjustments. This lead me to look for different handlebars that had a shorter reach. I was able to find an FSA Gravel handlebar ($40) with the same flare as the bars that come with the Roker Comp. The FSA bars, however, have a shorter reach and a compact drop. Then I found a 90mm Raleigh stem that matched the stem that came with the Roker Comp (eBay ~$20). Even with a few hundred miles on the bike, I am not sure which stem will be permanent, but the reach on the new handlebars has fixed most of my fitment issues. Luckily, I was able to find parts cheap to dial in the fit, but it was a little disappointing that it took so much work to dial everything in.

That aside, the bike looks great. I recently purchased my son a Tokul 2 which has the same paint scheme so he’s excited that we “match”. I also like the internally routed cables. The bike just looks clean. The bike comes with 40mm Clement tires and since I ride a mixture of chip and seal, gravel, and regular country roads, I opted to buy Clement Strada USH 32mm tires. These tires have a rounded profile with a smooth centered tread bead. Rolling resistance is better and faster. I’ll definitely use the 40mm Clements for specific gravel rides but for daily efforts, I like the Strada USH’s on this bike.

For the price of the bike I would have liked to see a couple of changes (aside from the fitment things I mentioned above - which are mostly personal preference). First, I would like to see a carbon seatpost. This would help with dampening on gravel roads. I would also like to see at least a SRAM Rival crank. The SRAM S350 crank is okay but the bike comes with SRAM Rival Hydro shifters, a Rival real derailleur, and Rival brakes, so putting a Rival GXP crank on this doesn’t seem like it is much of a stretch.

I see many many miles ahead of me on this bike

Very happy with the bike

Very lite and fast bike even with the wider tires. I’ve gotten a lot of complements on the “bright” paint job and 11-speed setup. The handlebars allow for a more upright riding position which helps on longer rides. I’ve had issues however with a lot of squeaking in the wheels. A little teflon grease on the hubs helped to eliminate the squeaks. The double-tap shifting in the break leaver takes some getting used to and sometimes gets stuck switching from down to up shifting. Be aware also that if you install a set of smaller wheels on the bike (700x23c) your feet may hit the pavement on turns (no problems with the tires that came with the bike). Other than these few issues, definitely a great bike that’s fun to ride – 4.5 STARS.

Great Bike

I got my Roker Comp 2 months ago and have done over 500 miles on the gravel including several races and it has performed perfectly. It was easy to setup and I am very happy with all aspects so far. It also works surprisingly well on the pavement.

From my first crush on the peddles I new this was a great bike. Took it on fast dirt path and jumped right on crushed gravel road in Boise idaho. This bike has no limits. Pulled up on the road and felt the quality of the frame. Smoth and confortable.
