Willard 1 (2017)

Get loose and remain unphased on the Willard 1. Made with geometry that inspires confidence in deep, loose gravel or dirt, the ultra-versatile Willard 1 allows you to go where most bikes can't, but also offers the flexibility to take out on long road rides in complete comfort. So ascend that forest service road with ease, take that sketchy gravel construction detour on your commute to work, or bust out a metric century over the weekend and the Willard 1 will perform above and beyond your expectations on all of it!

Made to take on all kinds of conditions, the Willard 1 features an AL-6061 Alloy Gravel frame, carbon fork, antishock stem and seatpost with vibration dampening elastomers to keep you fresh and comfortable over chip seal, bumps and rough road. Mechanical disc brakes provide great stopping power in inclement weather and thru axles on front and rear make the Willard 1 more responsive and safe. Shimano Sora shifters offer 18 gears to choose from. And the 40c tire fitment gives you the confidence to rail through loose conditions down roads that many wouldn't consider roads at all!

My First Gravel Bike - Not disappointed!

Review by Tyler C.
Overall Quality

Wanting to try gravel, but not sure I’d commit to it, I sought a gravel bike on a budget. In my search, I came across the Willard 1, and because the other reviews were good, and the price was in my budget , I pulled the trigger. I had anticipated I’d be getting a “budget” bike, but after receiving it, building it, and getting out on some Kansas gravel, I quickly realized this bike was an incredible value. The TRP Spurs disc breaks are probably some of the best mechanical discs on the market. The Shimano Sora groupset shifts perfectly well, and the bike itself is right at home on a gravel road. If you’re on the fence, I’d definitely recommend the Willard 1 as it’s more than just a budget gravel bike.

Fantastic All Around Bike!!

Review by Mike Q
Overall Quality

I've had this bike for about 3 months now and have put about 500 miles on it. I've ridden it mostly on the road but have ridden some packed gravel trails as well. It's fast and comfortable in all conditions I've tried. The Clement tires are a great choice on this bike and seem to be really durable. The combination of the frame, stem, seat post and tires really soaks up the bumps. I was originally a little hesitant on the Willard 1 due to the Sora component group but it's really very efficient for general riding. The TRP disc brakes are excellent as well. The bike overall feels remarkably stable even on dirt and wet roads. It really is a lot of fun to ride. Lastly, the bike looks great and I've received several compliments on the color. I really look forward to riding this bike every opportunity I get.

Great Bike Documentation could be better

Overall Quality

I've logged about 100 miles on my bike now, and the bike handles great, I had it on a back trail with large pieces of loose gravel, and some muddy areas and it rode very well in these difficult conditions. Bike is solid well made, and is a huge improvement over my previous bike (a mongoose mountain bike). I've never been a serious rider, so I don't have a basis for comparing this against other similar bikes, but it seems to handle a wide variety of terrain and has ample gear selection to handle varying and changing elevation. My only problem with the purchase is the documentation. The instructions for assembly and use are very generic and not particular to this bike. I would really like a shop manual type book and would purchase one if available.

very happy that Raleigh is selling their bikes online

This is my fourth Raleigh bike over the years and now very happy that I was able to purchase Willard 1 online, in the past we had to go through dealer and most dealers push what ever they have on the floor and if you special order one, its going to be full retail.
Very happy with the quality of the bike and its components, and most of all the geometry of the the way the bike fits me, I am 5'9" and ordered a 54 cm.
It seems to have a lower to the ground profile and the wheel base was shorter than what I thought a gravel bike would be, but it handles beautiful on loose grave after letting some air out of the tires. I choose the Willard 1 over the Willard 2 because it seems a little more like a road bike because of the skinnier tires and more gear ratios to choose from. It seems very fast and handles corners excellent at faster speeds.
I had one issue with front derailleur shift cable, which was my own fault when I was setting it up because I like to adjust derailleurs from scratch, which entails disconnecting shift cables, replacement parts were only four bucks at bike shop.
Overall this bike is fun to ride and handles better than anticipated.
