Solid RideReview by Bdumch
I’ve had this bike since June and what a solid bike. I’ve ridden it on road, single track, and 25+ mile gravel rides and it has performed beautifully! The bike was easy to set up right out of the box but I did have to do some minor brake adjustments due to disk run on the pads. However, I strongly recommend your LBS do a check of the bike to make sure everything is torqued and greased. After about a month, play developed in my headset which I then had tightened but then it started creaking. Turns out, the headset was never greased at the factory!!!!! Once that was taken care of, it’s been a joy to ride.(Posted on 11/25/2018)
Fun To RideReview by WallifordOverall Quality
I sat on a bench holding my Willard 4. A goat's head thorn had punctured my rear tire. My wife was on her way. Several people seeing my Raleigh, complimented its good looks. Before the thorn, I had ridden 12 miles of pavement, gravel, and washboard road. What joy! I am a baby boomer, but I felt like I was 15 years old as I happily pedaled along. I replaced the stock pedals with high quality dual platform pedals. One side is SPD, the other is flat. Perfect for me. Assembly was easy, taking me only 15 minutes to put her together.
The Shimano 105 drivetrain shifted flawlessly. The brakes were well adjusted and needed no help from me. The wheels were true. There was no death wobble when I flew down hills. The Clement X'Plor M50 40x700c tires eased bumps and did not keep me from moving along well on pavement. I felt confident controlling the bike on loose gravel and rough surfaces.
My wife arrived with my tire levers, pump, and spare tube. After repairing the flat, I sent her home and I mounted my Willard 4 and kept on riding.
I usually buy 54cm bikes. However, my Willard 4 is 56cm and fits me comfortably. Standover height immediately in front of the saddle is 31.25 inches.(Posted on 9/15/2018)
"I Love this bike!!!" and it is red not orange.Review by Kayoss MayhemOverall Quality
I got my Willard 4 about 1 week ago, I have put 68 miles on it biking every other day except over the weekend - -"I Love this bike!!!". Before I decided on this bike I visited all the bike shops, decided what features I wanted (I had previously tried a Schwinn hybrid commuter bike - don't recommend if you want to enjoy bicycling) . I wanted: aluminum frame, drop bars, Shimano 105 group set, thru-axles -15mm front and 12mm rear and mechanical TPR Spyre dual piston disk brakes in a gravel bike layout (wider tire possibilities). I almost compromised and got the 2017 Willard 1 since thought this one was orange (from the lousy pictures on this site) I like the blue on the Willard 1 and wanted the vibration dampening but in the end the 22 speed 105 group set won out and the wheels are tubeless ready (stems are even included but the tires are not tubeless compatible). I am Very GLAD I did!!!! - and this bike is RED not orange. When checking all the stores and the internet I was going to have to spend a lot more than what I spent on this one - like 500 or 600 more to get my list of features. At first I was concerned about the Alba Crank set - rest assured - I love it, I never use the tallest gear on this bike anyway and if I need to I can get a true 1 to 1 ratio for climbing hills. I have the 52cm version and it weighs in at 22lbs the same as the 56cm version that I had one of the support staff weigh for me. They did loose the vibration cancelling neck and seat post for the 2018 model years and yes it does vibrate some on gravel roads and gravel/oil treated roads but nothing I can't handle . When I hit the loose gravel roads it tracks well with the 40cm tire. I have to admit my previous bike is a 1988 Huffy Techtra, all original, so I am not a bike guru, but I have spent 3-4 months analyzing different bikes and gear. Right out of the box I put on the front tire, drop bar and seat - it shifts well and brakes well I didn't' even have to get out any tools as they came with it. I didn't have to adjust anything except seat height. I still hope to get it professionally tuned but that might have to wait a little bit money wise. I highly recommend investing is pedals - the ones that come with it are low quality and I think the factory pedals on my huffy are better. The wheels could use a little truing but they are not bad, they only appear to be off just under a millimeter. Raleigh's sizing seems to be pretty good as well. I recommend that you call their staff before purchasing as they have a better insight on sizing than just basing it on your height. I do love this bike and if you are going to get this bike or any bike and use clip-less pedals, I recommend that to take the bike inside your home and practice on your carpet (heard this from a guy at Bike and Hike today). I have learned the hard way and fell three times outside and have scratched my brake/shift lever.(Posted on 5/8/2018)
